Home care & staying at home

Most older adults want to stay in their own home. These are the services that make that possible — and the words people mix up most.

Home care vs. home health vs. hospice:
  • Home care (non-medical) — companionship, bathing, dressing, meals, light housekeeping, rides. Usually private-pay.
  • Home health (medical) — skilled nursing or therapy ordered by a doctor; often covered by Medicare.
  • Hospice — comfort-focused care for a serious illness; covered by Medicare.
  • Adult day programs — daytime supervision, meals, and activities, giving family caregivers a break.
